How it works: Each week, Sports Information Directors from across the country submit week-long performances they've deemed worthy of being placed among the best in the nation in the week that was. For award purposes, a normal week will run from Monday to Sunday. System and email nominations will close at 8pm Monday in all subsequent editions, and any games played on deadline day are incorporated into the following week.
Once we get the school and league nominations, check out conference weekly releases, and pick the brains of our own staff to get the clearest picture we can, we select among top performances by position. It's an elite group. Three forwards, two defensemen, one goaltender. Nothing else. To get here, means you're one of best performers on the ice at your position in the week that was.
To be clear, we aren't just looking at raw numbers. We're also looking to incorporate players that contributed in the pivotal moments, season defining wins, and stunning upsets that make our brand of hockey so exciting.
Don't see a player here? Think they would have made the cut? Encourage your school's Sports Information Director to nominate deserving players each week. From now, through the week following conference championship games, SIDs can submit their nominations from Sunday evening until 8pm on Mondays utilizing their PrestoSports login at http://d3football.com/nominations/award-status. In an effort to be as thorough as possible, weekly releases from our member conferences are also accepted. Generally, we operate on this premise... it's that good, we'll find you.
Now that we've explained the process, let's get to it. Here is your D3hockey.com National Team of the Week:
Gabby Suhr, Northland, Freshman
Suhr earned her first collegiate victory on arguably the biggest possible stage she could have found for an early season game. The Lumberjill netminder kept a second year Northland team in the hunt against No. 2 Adrian, as her 64 saves on 66 opposing shots bought enough time for teammate Allyson Reilly to score the game-winner in overtime for a 3-2 upset win on Sunday.
Hannah Kiraly, Plattsburgh, Sophomore
Kiraly scored two goals and registered two assists for four points in a 2-0 week for the Cardinals. Kiraly scored once, doing so on the power play, in Plattsburgh State's inaugural NEWHL game on Friday, helping the team blank Cortland, 6-0. She then posted one goal and two assists in the Cardinals' 8-1 victory over Cortland on Saturday.
Amanda Abounader, Northland, Sophomore
Aboundader helped add to the Lumberjills 2-0 cushion through two periods against No. 2 Adrian, a goal that would ultimately force overtime in Northland's 3-2 win over the Bulldogs.
Emily Stegora, St. Scholastica, Senior
Stegora had a goal and an assist in each game of a series sweep of Marian over the weekend. Both goals were credited as the game-winners. Stegora has recorded two points in each of the first three games of the season.
Sarah Hughson, Elmira, Senior
Hughson, the UCHC Player of the Week, had a stellar season-opening performance that saw the senior forward score three goals to pace the Purple and Gold to a 4-1 road win against Oswego State. Two of her goals came on the power play, accounting for two of EC's three extra-skater goals, and Hughson also produced the game-winning goal. The East Haddam, Connecticut, native scored twice in the first period and finished of her scoring late in the third period to complete her first-ever hat-trick. The three-goal performance is a career high for Hughson and the first multi-goal game of her collegiate career.
Melissa Sheeran, Plattsburgh, Senior
Sheeran tallied 10 points on three goals and seven assists in a 2-0 week for the Cardinals. She scored two goals and added three assists in the Cardinals' inaugural NEWHL game against SUNY Cortland on Friday, helping Plattsburgh State win, 6-0. On Saturday, Sheeran scored once and chipped in four assists in the team's 8-1 victory over Cortland. Sheeran has 13 points for the season.
