Men's playoffs: Another fave goes down in MASCAC semis

Compiled by D3hockey.com staff --

Tuesday night featured only a pair of games, but they brought even more conference tournament and NCAA tournament picture upheavel as UMass Dartmouth topped MASCAC top seed Plymouth State, 3-1, in a league playoff semifinal to advance to face Fitchburg State, a 5-2 winner ove Salem State. Plymouth State's ousting makes it the fourth conference tournament favorite to have fallen this postseason.

Fitchburg State's Sascha Figi came up big in the MASCAC semifinals as he netted a hat trick to help lead the Falcons to a 5-2 win over Salem State.

Im Plymouth, the host Panthers broke the ice when Chris Zuccaro tallied at the 7:07 mark of the second period but by the end of the frame UMass Dartmouth had drawn even thanks to a Jonathan Ruiz power play goal at the 18:09 mark. The goal was Ruiz' 27th of the season which is tops among all Division III skaters.

A Jerry Laakso goal at 5:05 of the third period handed UMD its first lead of the night and, while it proved to be all the Corsairs needed, Steven Leonard tacked on an insurance goal on the power play with just 50 seconds remaining.

Plymouth State carried a slim 28-27 shot advantage on the night but was stymied by UMD netminder Drew Michals who finished with 27 saves while conceding just the single goal. Leonard and Ruiz both finished with a goal and an assist to lead UMD, while Casey Shea added a pair of assists.

Fitchburg State broke a 2-2 game open with three goals in the final five minutes of the game as it topped Salem State to advance to its first MASCAC championship game since 2011. Sascha Figi buried the game-winner at the 15:46 mark, while Corey Hayashi struck at 18:29 and Ricky Kramer at 19:44. All came on special teams as Figi and Kramer sandwiched power play goals around Hayashi's shorthanded tally.

Figi's game-winner also gave him a hat trick as he registered first and second period goals that gave the Falcons a 2-0 lead, though Salem stormed back as Daniel Campbell and Ryan Wilkinson both scored to make it a 2-2 game before the end of the period.

Kirby Saari finished with 25 saves to backstop Fitchburg into the league championship game, while Nick DiNicola notched a trio of assists and James Gordon dished out two of his own to help pace the offense.

As the two seed, Fitchburg will host UMass Dartmouth on Saturday. The Falcons are seeking their first NCAA tournament berth while the Corsairs are in quest of their fifth and first since 2013. The two are 1-1-1 against each other this year as they skated to a tie on October 4, while UMass Dartmouth scored a 4-2 win on January 6 and Fitchburg answered back with a 6-3 win on February 1.
