Men's playoffs: Six punch NCAA tickets on Championship Saturday

Compiled by D3hockey.com staff --

One of the most exhilarating days of the season is in the books and, as expected, what a day it was. An overtime, a big upset, a first-time champion, and more. St. Norbert, Hobart, SUNY Geneseo, Nichols, Fitchburg State and Augsburg are headed to the NCAA tournament as all six won their respective conference tournaments, while Utica scored the UCHC title and UW-Eau Claire captured the WIAC crown. In the NESCAC, Sunday's championship game match-up is set as Trinity will play host to Colby.

Fitchburg State blanked UMass Dartmouth, 2-0, to win its first MASCAC title and advance to its first NCAA tournament.

As is always in the case in the postseason, you can catch up on every conference tournament below with our conference-by-conference playoff scoreboards, but here's a quick rewind of the action that went down on Championship Saturday:

CCC: Nichols might have been the five-seed but it didn't play like it on Saturday as the Bison trampled to an 8-3 win over University of New England. Scott Cuthrell and Filip Virgili both scored twice and added an assist to lead Nichols, which led 2-1 after one period and 5-2 after two. The Bison's NCAA tournament appearance will be their fourth all-time and third in the past five years.

MASCAC: Fitchburg State is off to the NCAA tournament for the first time in program history as the Falcons rode a 45-save shutout by goaltender Brian McGrath to a 2-0 win over UMass Dartmouth. Kyle Hillick and Tyler Warila were the goal scorers for Fitchburg.

MIAC: Augsburg will be making its fifth overall and third straight NCAA tournament appearance as the Auggies downed Gustavus Adolphus, 3-1. The game was deadlocked 1-1 after two periods but Lukas Gillett and Luke Dietsch both tallied in the third to help lift Augsburg to the win.

NCHA: Adrian and St. Norbert took a 1-1 game into overtime, and just 3:19 into the extra session it was St. Norbert's Timmy Nicksic that scored to hand the Green Knights the Harris Cup and their 14th NCHA playoff title. Tanner Froese also scored for St. Norbert, while Mathew Thompson netted the lone Adrian tally. The Green Knights will be making their 18th NCAA tournament appearance, all of which have come since 1997.

NEHC: Hobart's first year in the conference proved to be a productive one as the Statesmen rolled into Norwich and skated away with a 3-0 win to claim the conference championship. Andrew Longo, Jordan Haskell and Lawson McDougall all scored for Hobart, and all came in the third period. The win hands the Statesmen their 8th all-time and fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament.

NESCAC: The championship game match-up is set as, in the early game, Colby opened the day's action with a 5-1 semifinal win over Wesleyan. Phil Klitirinos and Spencer Hewson both posted a goal and two assists for the Mules, while goaltender Sean Lawrence turned in a strong 39-save effort. Colby will face Trinity, which rattled off five unanswered goals after falling behind 2-0 to top Williams, 5-2. Ryan Pfeffer scored twice for the Bantams, who outshot Williams 40-16 on the afternoon. Colby and Trinity have met twice this season with Trinity scoring a 5-2 win on January 12 and Colby answering with a 3-0 victory of its own on February 10.

SUNYAC: SUNY Geneseo kept things rolling as it piled on for a 7-1 win over Fredonia to advance to its sixth NCAA tournament. The Knights scored four times in the opening 11:39 and never looked back. Pat Condon scored twice for Geneseo while Mitch Ferguson and David Szmyd both posted a goal and two assists.

UCHC: Utica scored early and often as three first period power play goals and two even strength goals in the opening six minutes of the second staked the Pioneers a 5-0 lead and they never looked back en route to an 8-3 win over Elmira. Utica finished the night a blistering 5-for-7 on the power play and are now on record as the first UCHC conference playoff champion. Seven different skaters scored for the Pioneers.

WIAC: UW-Eau Claire nailed down its first WIAC postseason title since 2014 as the Blugolds held off UW-Stevens Point, 3-2. Todd Kortzinsky and Alex Strand scored early third period goals to put Eau Claire up, 3-1, and they proved to be enough as the Blugolds and goaltender Zach Dyment held off the Pointers in the closing minutes.
