Men's Computer Rankings - Feb. 21, 2012
by Steve Wiitala
Now that the regular season is over, it’s time to focus on the post season (or, in the case of the NCHA, to continue to focus on the post season). In terms of the regular season, it seems the computer rankings sorted themselves out very nicely in the end. Oswego State's wins over Plattsburgh and Potsdam gives the Lakers 688 points and a statistically significant edge on every other team’s regular season ratings. Norwich's 1-0-1 weekend keeps the Cadets solidly in second, and Amherst moves up to third by sweeping scoring wins at Middlebury and Williams. Plattsburgh finishes a solid fourth, and then we find Elmira and Utica in a virtual tie for fifth. The first West Region team in the rankings, as has been the case most of the season, is St. Norbert in the seventh position overall. Certainly the conference that fares the best in these rankings is the ECAC West, which places all five of its teams in the top 12.
As we look forward to the the postseason and ultimately the selection and seeding of the NCAA tournament, we have included an indication of each team’s most recent NCAA Regional Ranking in our listing this week. We also can take a look at the challenges that face the top ten teams in our rankings in this week’s action. The difference in the rankings between a team and it’s scheduled opponent should give us a good idea as to how well the teams match up.
- Oswego (688 points) – at home against one of Potsdam (469 points, ranked 51st), Fredonia (534, 29th), or Geneseo (505, 38th) in the Semifinals of the SUNYAC Tournament
- Norwich (672) – at home against University of New England (323, 71st) in the Quarterfinals of the ECAC East Tournament
- Amherst (658) – at home against Hamilton (486, 44th) in the Quarterfinals of the NESCAC Tournament
- Plattsburgh (648) – at home against one of Fredonia, Geneseo, or Buffalo State (548, 24th) in the Semifinals of the SUNYAC Tournament
- Elmira (634) – at home against either Utica (631, 6th) or Neumann (618, 8th) in the Semifinals of the ECAC West Tournament
- Utica (631) – at home against Neumann in the Quarterfinals of the ECAC West Tournament. If they win, they face Elmira
- St. Norbert (619) – at home against Wisconsin-Eau Claire (588, 16th) in the Semifinals of the NCHA tournament
- Neumann (618) – at Utica in the Quarterfinals of the ECAC West Tournament, and a win earns the Knights a trip to Elmira
- (tie) Hobart (614) at Manhattanville (598, 12th) in the Semifinals of the ECAC West Tournament / (tie) St. Thomas (614) at home against Hamline (475, 50th) or St. Olaf (516, 35th) in the Semifinals of the MIAC tournament.

Thoughts?
Questions, comments, arguments or otherwise, don't hesitate to jump into the discussion in the D3hockey forum.
The first and most obvious change is that Oswego has displaced Norwich at the top
of the list this week. This was not totally unexpected, as Norwich spent the weekend
playing two games against St. Michaels (ranked 68th), and as a consequence, their
strength of schedule components were reduced. On the weekend, the Cadets lost
14 points. Oswego also lost points for similar reasons (they played Cortland and
Hamilton), but their 6 point loss was enough to move them ahead of Norwich. This
is a good illustration of the fact that small fluctuations in the ratings can cause
changes in rank without any major events. The difference between Norwich and
Oswego was not statistically significant last week, and it’s not statistically significant
this week when they are flipped the other way. At this point we can certainly
say that Oswego and Norwich are very close statistically, and Plattsburgh is not
far behind. The comparison between Plattsburgh and Oswego is just outside
the margin of error, and then there is a gap as we move down the rankings from
Plattsburgh to Castleton.
Manhattanville and Utica made big moves this week, as Manhattanville’s sweep
over Neumann moved them all the way from 16th position to 6th, and Utica’s tie with
Elmira and win over Amherst moved them into 7th on the list. Another impressive
move came from St. Scholastica, who moved up 5 positions and 21 points by
sweeping Wisconsin-River Falls. Beyond those changes, the rankings held pretty
steady for the most part, and with the exception of Adrian, the top 15 in the poll line
up very well with the top 15 in these rankings.
We haven’t paid a lot of attention to the bottom of these rankings, but we did see
one interesting move on the part of Nichols, who by going 2-0 for the week gained
41 points in the ratings. That’s an impressive change for this time of the season.
