Men's Computer Rankings - Mar. 7, 2012
by Steve Wiitala
Here are the Men’s computer rankings as we head into the NCAA tournament. Norwich’s win in the ECAC East Finals and Oswego’s loss in the SUNYAC were enough to again create a virtual tie at the top of the computer rankings. If all goes according to plan, that virtual tie would be settled (as it should be) if the two teams advance to the NCAA Finals on March 17.
This week we look at how the computer rankings align with the first round and quarterfinal matchup, and who our rankings forsee as the four teams that will be making the trip to Lake Placid.
FIRST ROUND
Wentworth (574) at Plymouth State (574):
Both teams are making their first ever appearance in the NCAA tournament. This game is dead even as far as the computer is concerned. The two teams are not only statistically tied, but almost exactly tied at 574 points. When we look at one addtional decimal place, Wentworth comes in at 574.4 and Plymouth state comes in at 574.1. The computer tells us what we probably already knew: these two teams are close, and whoever does win will have earned a hard fought first-ever NCAA tournament victory. The computer picks Wentworth by an ever so slight statistically insignificant margin
St. Thomas (603) at St. Norbert (628):
The Green Knights have a statistically significant edge over the Tommies . St. Thomas surprised a lot of people when it was selected as a Pool C team, but they have had an outstanding season, finishing No. 10 in the computer rankings and No. 7 in the poll. The margin in the computer rankings suggests the Tommies will provide a stiff test for St. Norbert, but that the Green Knights will ultimately advance to the quarterfinals.
Milwaukee School of Engineering (536) at Gustavus Adolphus (571):
The Raiders were the winners of the MCHA tournament and are making their first NCAA tournament appearance, and the Gusties were the winners of the MIAC tournament. In this matchup, the computer rankings favor Gustavus by a statistically significant margin to advance to the quarter-finals
QUARTERFINALS
Wentworth/Plymouth State (574) at Norwich (677):
The Cadets have a very heavy advantage over either of these two teams, both in terms of reputation, poll ranks, and computer ranks. This is an NCAA game, so one can never be 100% certain, but all signs point to Norwich being a heavy favorite over either the Leopards or Panthers. The computer sends Norwich to Lake Placid. The opposition will have something to say about it, but this is without a doubt the easiest prediction to make according to the computer.
Plattsburgh State (667) at Amherst (669):
This is obviously the most competitive of the four quarterfinal games. Amherst has the better record, and Plattsburgh has a strong credential in terms of strength of schedule. This is another game that should go down to the wire. Once again the computer’s decision is not statistically significant, but the call is for Amherst to win the trip to Lake Placid.
Elmira (627) at Oswego (680):
The Lakers have a significant edge on the Soaring Eagles, and also defeated them twice early in the season. The ECAC West and SUNYAC play each other a lot, so neither team should be surprised with what they see on the other side of the ice. The computer gives a strong edge to the Lakers for another trip to Lake Placid.
Gustavus Adolphus (571) at St. Norbert (628):
Based on our First Round projection, this game should match Gustavus and St. Norbert. Whichever of the four possible matchups takes place, the home team has a significant edge in the computer rankings. Presuming that our first round projection holds, the Western representative at Lake Placid should be the Green Knights.
If form, and the computer rankings hold, we can expect to see Norwich, Amherst, Oswego, and St. Norbert in the national semifinals at Herb Brooks Arena. Both according to the human polls and the computer rankings, this would be an extremely really strong field, and there is also a good chance that we might see a repeat of the 2010 field if Plattsburgh can get by Amherst. Either way, the weekend at Lake Placid should be memorable. We will return to wrap up the computer rankings for the season after the conclusion of the tournament.

Margin of error: 13 points
Thoughts?
Questions, comments, arguments or otherwise, don't hesitate to jump into the discussion in the D3hockey forum.
The first and most obvious change is that Oswego has displaced Norwich at the top
of the list this week. This was not totally unexpected, as Norwich spent the weekend
playing two games against St. Michaels (ranked 68th), and as a consequence, their
strength of schedule components were reduced. On the weekend, the Cadets lost
14 points. Oswego also lost points for similar reasons (they played Cortland and
Hamilton), but their 6 point loss was enough to move them ahead of Norwich. This
is a good illustration of the fact that small fluctuations in the ratings can cause
changes in rank without any major events. The difference between Norwich and
Oswego was not statistically significant last week, and it’s not statistically significant
this week when they are flipped the other way. At this point we can certainly
say that Oswego and Norwich are very close statistically, and Plattsburgh is not
far behind. The comparison between Plattsburgh and Oswego is just outside
the margin of error, and then there is a gap as we move down the rankings from
Plattsburgh to Castleton.
Manhattanville and Utica made big moves this week, as Manhattanville’s sweep
over Neumann moved them all the way from 16th position to 6th, and Utica’s tie with
Elmira and win over Amherst moved them into 7th on the list. Another impressive
move came from St. Scholastica, who moved up 5 positions and 21 points by
sweeping Wisconsin-River Falls. Beyond those changes, the rankings held pretty
steady for the most part, and with the exception of Adrian, the top 15 in the poll line
up very well with the top 15 in these rankings.
We haven’t paid a lot of attention to the bottom of these rankings, but we did see
one interesting move on the part of Nichols, who by going 2-0 for the week gained
41 points in the ratings. That’s an impressive change for this time of the season.
