PAXTON, Mass – It was announced earlier this year that Anna Maria College will be adding a handful of programs to the athletic department for the 2018-2019 school year. Two of those new sports teams will be Ice Hockey for men and women, as announced during the Fall Semester.
"Anna Maria College is excited to be expanding its Athletics programs. We are looking to appeal to as many student-athletes as possible and adding ice hockey will definitely help with that.” said AD Serge DeBari.
The AMCATS men and women will play at the New England Sports Center in Marlborough. Building the excitement around the programs is the hiring of men's coach David McCauley, and women's head coach Mike Cox. McCauley holds over 20 years of coaching experience following a strong playing career at Salem State.
"It is not often that a first year program can attract a coach with such an impressive coaching resume," added DeBari. "Beginning a new program is always challenging but certainly a challenge that David has already proven he is capable of handling."
Meanwhile, Mike Cox is no stranger to Division III, as he previously minded the bench as head coach of Salve Regina's women from 2006 to 2014, and won a program best 101 games in that time frame as the head coach of the Seahawks. Cox also has Division I assistant experience at Northeastern, Boston College, and the 1999 NCAA championship team at Harvard.
“I am honored and humbled to be selected the first coach of women’s hockey at Anna Maria,” said Cox. “From the outset, I was very impressed with the college’s plan for launching a women’s hockey program. This endeavor is going further the mission of this rich and vibrant Catholic institution while also giving more female hockey players a chance to play collegiately.”
Anna Maria College will compete at the DIII level as an independent for the 2018-19 season with the intention of joining an established league for the 2019-2020. They are located on a 200-acre campus in Paxton, Mass, northwest of downtown Worcester, Mass.
