No. 4 UW-River Falls drops 2-1 decision to UW-Stout
RIVER FALLS, Wis. -- The Falcon men's hockey team lost a 2-1 decision to UW-Stout on Saturday night at Hunt Arena.
The loss snaps a three game Falcon winning streak. It is just the third loss of the year for the No. 4 ranked Falcons. UWRF is now 12-3-2 overall, 6-2-2 in NCHA play and 5-2-1 in WIAC games.
There was just one goal scored in the first period and two in the third.
Stout scored the only goal of the first period. Chris Stafne scored from in close to give the Blue Devils a lead at 7:52. Stout, now 7-9-1 overall, had a 13-7 advantage in shots in the first 20 minutes.The Falcons had two power-play opportunities in the first period but could not convert.
There was no scoring in the second period, but the Falcons had the best of the play. UWRF outshot Stout, 13-4. Both teams had one power-play chance.
In the third Stout took a 2-0 lead when Mike Hartviksen scored at 7:43.
The Falcons were finally able to get on the scoreboard at 12:59. Jason Yuel scored a power-play goal. It was his five goal of the season and 20th point. Geoff Shewmake and Jake Calleja both assisted on the goal. Yuel has scored at least one point in three straight games and five of the team's last six contest. Shewmake has a three-game scoring streak and Calleja has a point in two of the team's last three games.
Falcon goalie Scott Lewan made 24 saves and is now 12-3-2. UWS goalie, Nick Hopper, stopped 30 shots and he is now 3-3-1.
The Falcons will next play a weekend NCHA series at St. Scholastica and Friday and Saturday. Game time is 7 p.m., both days.
