Brunswick, Maine - Senior captain Anthony Sabitsky (Sicklerville, N.J.) scored the game-winning goal in overtime and added an assist to lead the visiting Trinity College Bantams to a 4-3 victory over the Bowdoin College Polar Bears in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's ice hockey action this afternoon. scored midway through overtime to lift the Trinity men's ice hockey team to a 4-3 win over Bowdoin on Sunday afternoon. Trinity, ranked No. 5 in the nation, rebounds from a 3-0 loss at Colby last night that snapped a nine-game winning streak and ups the Bantam record to 16-4-2 overall and 13-2-1 in the NESCAC. Bowdoin drops to 8-14 overall and 5-11 in the league. Trinity hosts Wesleyan Friday night at 7 p.m. and plays at the Cardinals the next day at 3 p.m. to close the regular season.
The Bantams spent nearly half of the first period playing down a skater as the referees pegged Trinity with four penalties. On their first power play, Bradley Ingersoll and Thomas Dunleavy both teed up shots that cycled through Daniel McMullan, but neither cplayer could best Trinity senior goalie Alex Morin (St. HUbert, Quebec). Bowdoin got on the board 6:45 into the game as Pat Geary found Keenan Murray from behind the goal line. Murray set up at the top of the right circle and fired a shot past Morin for the 1-0 lead. Trinity threatened at the end of a Bowdoin shift change, as rookie forward Eric Benshadle (Getzville, N.Y.) skated alone down the slot and nearly put the puck past Peter Cronin's right pad. Bantam senior captain Griffyn Martin (Southport, Conn.) finally answered with 4:12 to play in the period to tie the game at 1-1. Rookie forward Dylan Healey (Goshen, N.Y.) fed Martin from the left side of Bowdoin's zone to just inside the blue line for a one-timer that went five-hole.
With a nearly two-minute, five-on-three power play, the Bantams quickly took the lead 20 seconds into the advantage in the second period. Sophomore forward Barclay Gammill (New Canaan, Conn.) and senior forward Tyler Whitney (Wakefield, Mass.) traded the puck back and forth before Whitney finally put away a one-timer from the inside edge of the right circle. The Bantams extended their lead after a successful two-on-one breakaway into the Bowdoin zone one minute into the third. Benshadle carried into Polar Bear territory with junior forward Ryan Pfeffer (Canton, Mass.) to his left. Benshadle drew the Bowdoin defender, waited until he slid to the ice, and centered the puck to Pfeffer in the slot for a clean put away. Bowdoin closed the gap as Pat Geary Geary wristing a shot past Morin top shelf 5:47 into the final frame. Spencer Antunez tied the game for Bowdoin on a power-play backhand to the far post to knot the game at 3-3. Trinity earned a power play late in the third, and Gammill nearly put the puck away with a quick shot from just outside the crease, but Cronin turned the bid aside as he slid across the ice. Sabitsky ended the game 2:29 into overtime, taking the puck down the left boards and crossing in front of the crease before putting the puck away at the far post. Morin had 20 saves and Cronin stopped 29 shots. Trinity overcame 29 penalty minutes, holding the home team to one goal on eight chances with the extra skater.
