Colton Schmidt scored his second goal of the game 2:38 into sudden-death overtime as fourth-seed Gustavus edged top-seed St. Thomas, 4-3, in MIAC men's hockey semifinal playoff action Saturday night in Mendota Heights.
The Toms (16-9-1) held brief leads at 1-0 and 3-2 but missed a good chance early in overtime. Cullen Willox, Brett Gravelle and Tanner Barnes had the Tommie goals. The Toms came in 13-0 this season in games when they scored three or more goals but that streak ended Saturday.
St. Thomas went ahead 3-2 on Barnes' goal with 7:54 left in regulation. But the Gusties tied the game 1:49 later.
Gustavus (12-12-3) won its second one-goal playoff game in three days. The Gusties advance to play next weekend at third-seed Augsburg in the playoff finals. The Auggies scored two late goals to stun second-seed St. John's in St. Cloud.
The top two seeds lost at home Friday in the MIAC men's basketball playoff semifinals, and the top two seeds lost at home Saturday in the MIAC men's hockey playoffs.
