Women’s Ice Hockey Claims 4-1 Victory Over SUNY Canton

BOSTON, Mass. – The Endicott women's ice hockey team posted a 4-1 win over SUNY Canton on Tuesday afternoon in the consolation game of the ninth annual Codfish Bowl at UMass Boston's Beacons Ice Arena.

Freshman forward Dynnea Bezona (Fairbanks, Alaska) gave the Gulls a 1-0 lead late in the first period (14:19) when she buried her fourth goal of the season via assists from Maggie Layo(Sandwich, Mass.) and Linnéa Jonsson (Linkoping, Sweden).

The Gulls then went on to strike for two more tallies in the second as Jordyn Cholish (Exton, Pa.) and Holly Erbe (Woodbine, Md.) scored back-to-back markers at 6:04 and 8:52, respectively, to produce a 3-0 advantage on the scoreboard.

Lexi Klein (Shoreview, Minn.) was credited with the primary assist on both goals, while Maddy McNeally (Severna Park, Md.) picked up an assist on Cholish's first career goal to begin the scoring in the period.

In the third, SUNY Canton's Tess Adams (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) cut into the deficit at 3-1 by firing home her team-leading 12th goal of the season at 7:40, but Endicott freshman goaltender Vendala Jonsson (Linkoping, Sweden) made nine saves down the stretch, while Layo also added an empty net, power play goal at 18:50 to secure the victory.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Cholish was named to the Codfish Bowl All-Tournament Team.
  • Klein leads the team in assists this season with five total.
  • Jonsson finished the contest with 27 saves, which marks the fifth time in 2015-16 she has made 20 or more saves in a game (1-2-2).
  • Endicott is 2-1 overall in neutral site games in 2015-16.
  • The Gulls tied their season-high for power play goals in today's win with two (Bezona – 1st period, Layo – 3rd period).
  • Endicott's Meredith Vlachos (East Bridgewater, Mass.) and SUNY Canton's Margret Troiano (Morristown, N.Y.) tied for the game-high in faceoff wins with 12.

FOR THE FOES

  • Sophomore goaltender Rebecca DiNardo (Ottawa, Ontario) made 28 saves in the loss (3-4-0).
  • The Kangaroos won the face-off matchup over Endicott, 34-31.

Endicott (7-3-2) hosts Nichols College in a non-conference matchup this Friday at Raymond J. Bourque Arena at 3 p.m. SUNY Canton (4-9-1) welcomes Buffalo State to its campus for a pair of games this coming Saturday (7 PM) and Sunday (2 PM).
