MARLBOROUGH, Mass. -- Mary Wirth scored a goal and set up two others to help lead the University of New England to a 4-1 non-conference women's ice hockey win over Becker College Tuesday evening (Dec. 6) at the New England Sports Center.

The Nor'easters (4-5-1) received all the scoring they would need during a one-minute span early in the first period. Wirth got UNE on the board at the 5:37 mark with an unassisted tally -- her first of the season. The visitors would then double their lead just 58 seconds later when Julianne Sheehan found the back of the cage, assisted by Abby Kinens

Becker (3-7-1) sliced its deficit in half at 13:44 of the frame on Briana Luciani's sixth goal of the year.

UNE tallied power-play goals in the second and third periods to complete its scoring. Kierra Wright notched her first goal of the season at 8:01 of the second, and Shannon Smith scored at 13:53 of the third. Wirth assisted on both goals, and Gabby Crugnale was credited with a secondary assist on Smith's tally.

Sydney Helmbrecht made 14 saves to record the victory in goal for the Nor'easters, who led 32-15 in shots and 44-17 in face-off wins. Hawk goaltender turned aside 28 shots.

UNE returns to action Friday night with a 7 p.m. road game at Bowdoin College.
