HARRISVILLE, R.I. – Freshmen McKenna Gernander and Mel McAleer each scored their first collegiate goals in the first period as the Nichols College women's ice hockey team scored a 2-1 win in its season-opener Friday evening in Colonial Hockey Conference (CHC) action at Levy Rink.

Gernander (above, left) opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 6:06 of the opening period. Freshman Jordyn McGuire let go of a point shot that was stopped, but Gernander pounced on the rebound and beat sophomore netminder Brooke Susac on the glove side.

Less than one minute later,  McAleer (above, right) – who was credited with the second assist on Gernander's tally – took a pass from McGuire at the top of the right circle, stepped in and fired a shot from the face-off dot that beat Susac at 6:55 on the power play.

The Kangaroos outshot the Bison 31-9 over the final 40 minutes, but Nichols junior goaltender Cassandra Goyette turned aside all but one of those shots to record the victory. She finished the night with 44 saves and kept the Kangaroos scoreless on all four of their PP opportunities.

Freshman Sophia Koenig got SUNY Canton on the board with an unassisted marked at 8:13 of the third period. She collected a loose puck, skated down the left wing boards, and beat Goyette with a wrist shot.

Susac finished the evening with 16 saves.

"Commitment to blocking shots and learning to battle. We had a lot of battle dates throughout the week. We've really instilled that in our players and they have bought in. Our never give up, never say die attitude really helped." –O'Grady, on the Kangaroos push in the third period
