SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -- The University of New England women's ice hockey team defeated Saint Michael's College by a score of 3-2 on Friday evening (Dec. 1) at Cairns Arena.

The Nor'easters (3-2-4) never trailed in the contest, after Kyra Yu netted a power-play goal just past the midway mark of the 1st period, with an assist to Julianne Sheehan.

Things were tied up early in the 2nd when Ashley Dineen got the Purple Knights (2-9) on the board, but UNE reclaimed the cushion with 1:31 left before the intermission. Michaela McLaughlin stole it from a defender behind the SMC cage and fed it to Shannon Upton, who beat the goalie over the shoulder.

Tatum Gietl tallied what proved to be the game-winner less than four minutes into the 3rd.

After being out-shot 29-12 through 40 minutes, Saint Michael's upped the pressure to post a 13-11 edge in the final period. The hosts got one back with 9:06 to play on a goal by Katherine O'Brien, but couldn't find the equalizer before time expired -- even with pulling their goalie for the last 1:28 of the match.

Caty Flagg turned in 23 saves to get the win for UNE, while her counterpart for the Purple Knights, Nicole Talcott, logged 37 stops.

The teams will have a quick turnaround to square off again at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
