ASTON, Pa. -- The No. 1/1-ranked Elmira College women's ice hockey team won its third-straight contest to start the season on Saturday afternoon, dispatching United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) foe Neumann University by a 2-1 margin.
The Soaring Eagles peppered the Knights with 51 shots on target, but Helen Cooney stood tall in the net for Neumann, recording 49 saves. EC's defense stifled the Knights for the majority of the contest, limiting them to 11 shots on goal. Sophomore Elizabeth Hanson '21 earned her first win in her first start of the season in net for the Purple and Gold, finishing the game with 10 saves.
EC applied consistent pressure throughout the contest, finally breaking through for the opening goal with five minutes left to play in the second period. Ariella Haas '22 found Jess Adams '21, who quickly shifted the puck to Tristen Tolan '21. Tolan did the rest, calmly slotting the puck past Cooney to give the Purple and Gold a 1-0 lead.
The up-and-down nature of the game continued into the third period, as the Soaring Eagles upped their pressure in the offensive zone, logging a game-high 20 shots on target during the stanza. Maddie Evangelous '19 eventually netted the game-winner with 1:25 left on the clock. Neumann pulled their goalkeeper to search for the game-tying goal, but EC pounced, as Emma Crocker '21 fed a streaking Evangelous, who guided the puck into the open net to give the Soaring Eagles a 2-0 lead. The Knights pulled one goal back with 20 seconds left on the clock, as Jackie Schneider was able to sneak a shot past Hanson, giving the contest its final 2-1 scoreline.
