Women's playoffs: First round Friday in the NCHA and WIAC

Compiled by D3hockey.com staff --

Five playoff contests went down on Friday night and all featured opening round match-ups in first-to-three-point series in the WIAC and NCHA. The end result: UW-River Falls, UW-Eau Claire, Adrian and Lake Forest all notched wins, while St. Scholastica and Concordia (Wis.) skated to a tie. All series wrap up on Saturday and should neither team have earned three points by the conclusion of game two, a 20 minute mini-game will follow to settle the series.

UW-Eau Claire's Holly Turnbull chipped in with a pair of assists in the Blugolds' 3-1 opening game win over UW-Superior.

WIAC

No. 7 ranked and top-seeded UW-River Falls had little trouble with UW-Stevens Point as the host Falcons rolled to a 9-0 win. The Falcons held the Pointers to just 11 shots and cruised out to a 4-0 lead after two prior to erupting for five more in the third. Carly Moran (2-1-3), Callie Hoff (1-2-3), Haley Nielsen (0-3-3), Sam Young (2-0-2), Bella Wagner (1-1-2), Kathryn Larson (1-1-2) and Payton Rudiger (0-2-2) all turned in multi-point nights to help lead River Falls.

In Eau Claire, the second-seed and No. 10 Blugolds held course with a 3-1 win over UW-Superior. Courtney Wittig, Erin Goodell and Kelly Knetter all scored for Eau Claire, while Holly Turnbull added a pair of assists. The Blugolds posted a 38-20 shot advantage on the afternoon and goaltender Erin Connolly finished with 19 saves to get the win.

NCHA

Likely facing a NCHA championship or bust situation as far as making the NCAA tournament goes, No. 1 seed and fifth-ranked Adrian got its postseason off to a solid start with a 4-0 win over Marian. The Bulldogs broke the game open with three goals in a 6:22 stretch of the second period. Sydney Daversa, Brooke Schembri, Rose Krasofsky and Brianna Buchananan all scored for Adrian, which rolled up a 43-23 shot advantage on the night.

Second-seed Lake Forest also registered a win as the Foresters blanked St. Norbert, 4-0. Kristina Bellomo and Megan Lyke posted first period goals, while Amy Budde and Kayla Griffith both tallied in the second. Olivia Spellmire added three assists for the Foresters, while netminder Jacque Rogers finished with 17 saves to get her seventh shutout of the season.

Saturday's game will be for all the marbles in Duluth as host St. Scholastica and Concordia (Wis.) skated to a 2-2 tie. St. Scholastica carried a 2-1 lead into the third period but a Natasha Wanless power play goal at 5:58 of the frame drew CUW back even at 2-2. Kristen Kennedy also scored for CUW when she opened the scoring with a first period power play goal, while St. Scholastica picked up second period goals by Mac Johnson and Denisa Lalíková. Concordia held a narrow 28-24 shot advantage in the contest.
