ADRIAN, Mich. - It looked like the men's hockey team would fall into a much closer race for the MCHA regular season title on Friday night. That was until 15 seconds left in regulation when freshman Ryan Gieseler fired a shot from the blue line past MSOE goaltender Connor Toomey on an extra attacker goal to give Adrian a 3-3 tie with Milwaukee School of Engineering. Gieseler found space through traffic after the Bulldogs pulled goaltender Scott Shackell with 40 seconds left. Josh Cousineau and Chris Stansik each had an assist on the game-tying goal and then both teams went into overtime. MSOE outshot Adrian, 4-2, in the extra period and each team earned a point in the MCHA standings. Adrian now has 23 points and retains a four-point lead over the Raiders. The two teams will play again tomorrow at Arrington Ice Arena with puck drop scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
Adrian improved its all-time record to 18-1-2 against Milwaukee School of Engineering. The Bulldogs entered the game ranked sixth in the latest USCHO Division III Poll while the Raiders are ranked 14th.
MSOE led 1-0 at 9:05 of the first period as Josh Keizer scored his eighth goal of the season on a quick wrister from the left circle. Steve Shaffroth and Kyle Smith each had an assist on Keizer's goal. Adrian answered at 14:51 as freshman Justin Basso scored his sixth goal of the season with assists from Duston Hebebrand and Shelby Gray. Hebebrand brought the puck into the offensive zone and fed the puck cross ice to the right wing where Basso fired the puck from the right circle.
The second period started with a goal by MSOE at 6:40 on a 4-on-4 opportunity. Jordan Keizer snapped the puck past Shackell from the left wing as the shot seemed to confuse the netminder under his arm on the blocker side. Keizer's 11th goal of the year was assisted by Bradley Tierney.
The Bulldogs again found an answer at 8:57 on the power play this time as freshman Ryan Lowe scored his first of the season on the right doorstep scoring off a nice pass from Jordan Watts. Zach Graham also had an assist to make it 2-2 after 40 minutes.
Tierney gave the Raiders a 3-2 lead just 32 seconds into the third period as he laced a shot past Shackell from the right wing with assists from Jordan and Josh Keizer. Tierney's 11th goal of the season held firm until the final 15 seconds when Gieseler and the Bulldogs used a little magic to tie the contest.
Adrian went 1-for-4 on the power play and held MSOE to 0-for-4. Shackell finished with 31 saves including 12 in the first period. Toomey stopped 28 shots including 13 in the third. The last six games between the two teams have been decided by two goals or less. Adrian is now 9-0-2 all-time at home against the Raiders. The Bulldogs are now 15-for-57 on the power play at home this season. For Basso it was his first goal in the last eight games.
