PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team capitalized on a late penalty by Buffalo State, rattling off three power-play goals to skate to a 6-1 win in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game Friday night at the Stafford Ice Arena.
Bengals' captain Mike Zannella was whistled for a five-minute major and a game misconduct at the 13:55 mark of the third period after sending Plattsburgh's Michael Cassidy into the boards. Plattsburgh State seized the opportunity to blow the game open, netting three goals in 49 seconds to secure the Cardinals' largest margin of victory against the Bengals since 2009.
Plattsburgh's Mark Constantine tallied the lone goal of the first period at the 18:35 mark, scoring on a give-and-go with Nick Jensen.
Midway through the second period, Buffalo State (2-3-1, 1-2-1 SUNYAC) tied it up when Nick Melligan buried his own rebound for his fourth of the year.
Michael Cassidy gave the Cardinals the lead for good with 26 seconds remaining in the middle period, taking a pass from Alex Brenton for his first of the year.
Brenton added a goal of his own from Michael Radisa and Cassidy to open the third period.
The floodgates opened once Plattsburgh (3-0-0, 3-0-0 SUNYAC) went on the long power-play. At 16:14 Connor Gorman's shot deflected off Alex Jensen's skate and Luke Baleshta was there to pick up the loose puck, beating Bengals' goaltender Kevin Carr to his left side.
Twenty-nine seconds later, Nick Jensen made a centering pass to Kevin Emmerling, who made it 5-1 in favor of the Cardinals.
Baleshta rounded out the scoring on a deflection at the 17:03 mark from Barry Roytman and Steven Cook.
The Cardinal defense was bolstered by the return of senior defenseman Paul Puglisi and junior goaltender Mathieu Cadieux. Cadieux made 19 saves to earn his first win of the season.
Carr turned away 41 of the 47 shots he faced in the loss for Buffalo State.
Plattsburgh wraps up the weekend of conference play tomorrow night against Fredonia State, who picked up a 3-1 win at Potsdam Friday night. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Stafford Ice Arena.
