Balanced Attack Leads Manhattanville Past Morrisville State, 6-3

More news about: Manhattanville

STAMFORD, Conn. – The Manhattanville men's hockey team continued to play well on its four-game homestand on Saturday night, as the Valiants skated past Morrisville State, 6-3, in non-conference action at Terry Connors Rink.

Manhattanville again used a varied attack to take down the Mustangs, as six different players found the net in the win. Senior Scott Hudson (St. Albert, Alta./Sherwood Park Crusaders (AJHL)) and junior Luc Van Natter (Fort Erie, Ont./Aurora Tigers (OPJHL)) both had three points on a goal and two assists, while freshman linemate Matt Coleman (Brentwood, N.Y./Springfield Pics (EJHL)) added a goal and an assist. Senior Brendan Turner (Tisdale, Sask./Lloydminster Bobcats (AJHL)) and sophomore Anton Racklin (Gothenburg, Sweden/Fairbanks Ice Dogs (NAHL)) both had a goal and an assist as well, while sophomore Mark Rivera (Belmar, N.J./Springfield Pics (EJHL)) had three helpers to lead the Valiant charge.

Valiant sophomore netminder Alex Scola (Exeter, N.H./Woodstock Slammers (MJHL)) won his first game in his first start as a Valiant but it didn't come easy as he needed to turn aside 38 shots.

Manhattanville jumped on the scoreboard right away as Hudson took a feed from Coleman and buried the shot into the back of the net just 2:00 into the game to put the Valiants up 1-0. Less than 10 minutes later, Hudson passed the puck up the boards to Van Natter, who connected with Coleman streaking up the ice for a breakaway attempt. One-on-one with Jakob Rasmussen, Coleman was able to flick the puck past the Morrisville netminder to put the home team up 2-0.

The Mustangs would not go away quietly as Steve Dol was able to sneak one past Scola from the blue line to slice Manhattanville's lead in half at the 16:29 mark of the first stanza.  Morrisville State began to pick up steam as the Valiants went down a man with just over two minutes left in the period, but the Valiants were able to hold Morrisville State's power play at bay and the two teams went into the locker room with the Valiants hanging onto the one-goal lead.

The second period was all Manhattanville, as the home team scored three times. For the second consecutive period, the Valiants scored early, thanks to a Van Natter goal that came just after a Valiant power play had expired. Just over three minutes later, Turner took a pass from Rivera and nailed the puck into the left side of the net to extend Manhattanville's lead to three goals. Junior Louie Balzano (Staten Island, N.Y./New York Apple Core (EJHL)) added an insurance goal with just over a minute left in the second period to put the Valiants up 5-1 heading into the second intermission.

In the third period, Morrisville State turned it on and kept getting scoring chance after scoring chance, finishing the frame with a 16-5 edge in shots. Eric Fletcher got his team to within 5-2 by getting the puck past Scola just 6:01 into the final period. But the home team was able to answer back just over six minutes later, as Racklin scored his first collegiate tally with 7:26 to go to put the Valiants up 6-2 and seal the win for the home team.

Despite Manhattanville holding the shot edge in the first two frames, Morrisville State used its tenacious third period to outshoot the Valiants for the night, 41-38. Both teams were shut out on the power play as the Valiants went 0-6 and the Mustangs went 0-7 with the extra man.

Manhattanville (3-1-1), which moves to 3-0-0 at Terry Conners Rink, will conclude their four-game homestand on Tuesday night when they take on non-conference Western New England. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7 p.m. at Terry Connors Rink, with the live video broadcast set to begin at 6:45 p.m. on GoValiants.TV.
