GORHAM, Maine – Sophomore Lorne Miller (Montreal, Quebec) scored his first goal of the season with 14.7 seconds remaining in overtime to give the University of Southern Maine Huskies a 3-2 victory over the Colby College Mules in a non-conference game Tuesday night at the USM Ice Arena. The win was the third straight for the Huskies, and improved their overall record to 4-2-0. The Mules dropped their third straight game to fall to 0-3-0.
Playing in his first game after missing four games with an injury, Miller converted a pass from sophomore Ryan Seward (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) into a 15-foot shot past Colby sophomore goaltender Jordan Nathan (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) for the game-winning marker. Freshman Alex Pompeo (Hingham, Mass.) also picked up an assist on the play. Southern Maine was coming to the end of a five-minute power play when Miller scored.
Southern Maine built a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by sophomore Sam Guimond (Portland, Maine) and junior Troy Thibodeau (Danvers, Mass.). Guimond scored from in close converting an assist from junior Mike Greene (Arvada, Colo.) at 8:23. Thibodeau finished off a nice set up from Seward and Miller at 9:41.
Colby cut the margin in half in the middle period as junior Jack Bartlett (Lynn, Mass.) scored his first goal of the season from the right wing circle at 4:25. Sophomore Ray Zeek (Wallingford, Conn.) and junior Ben Chwick (Purchase, N.Y.) picked up the assists on the play.
Senior Cory McGrath (Yarmouthport, Mass.) drew the Mules level at 9:00 of the third period when he intercepted a poor clearing attempt in the USM defensive zone and fired the puck into the open net for his first goal.
USM freshman goalie Josh Hillegas (Middleton, Wis.) recorded 22 saves to pick up his fourth win in five decisions. Nathan stopped 26 shots for Colby.
Southern Maine is off until November 30 when it will travel to Babson College for an ECAC Men's East game. Colby is back in action on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) when it plays Suffolk University in a first round game of the Bowdoin/Colby Tournament. Saturday's game will be at Bowdoin with Sunday's (4:00 p.m.) second round game against Salve Regina University being played at Colby.
