Manhattanville drops third straight, 4-1 at Utica

UTICA, N.Y. – No. 4 Utica used a 50-25 shot advantage and a two-goal night from Ridge Garbutt to defeat No. 13 Manhattanville by a 4-1 score in ECAC West Conference men's hockey action on Saturday night at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.

Senior Jason Bowles scored the lone goal of the game for Manhattanville (11-7-1, 4-4-1 ECAC West), while Justin Hogan and Mike Slowikowski notched tallies for Utica (15-3-0, 6-2-0 ECAC West) in addition to Garbutt's pair.

The first period saw only one goal find the back of the net, as Garbutt posted an even-strength tally at the 11:24 mark of the frame. Utica used its 15-5 edge in shots to take that one-goal advantage into the first intermission.

Manhattanville was able to even the score with 7:32 gone by in the middle frame, converting on its second power-play chance of the evening. Bowles did the honors for the visitors, taking passes from junior assistant captain Craig Simchuk and sophomore Anton Racklin in netting his fourth goal of the year.

Unfortunately for the Valiants that tie lasted only nine seconds, as Hogan won the ensuing faceoff and a few moments later beat sophomore Brian Fleming for the goal at 7:41. The Pioneers finished the middle stanza with that 2-1 lead and a 19-6 edge in shots for the frame.

The Pioneers added two more goals in the latter half of the third period to seal the win, as Slowikowski scored on the power play at 10:31 and Garbutt added his second of the night with 3:15 to go in the contest.

Fleming did his best to keep the visitors in the game, turning aside 46 shots in a losing effort. Nick Therrien made 24 saves on 25 shots for the home team in the win.

Manhattanville, which finishes its eight-game road trip with a 3-5-0 record, will return home to Terry Conners Rink for the first time in 59 days on Friday, as the Valiants host Neumann in the front end of a home-and-home series beginning at 4:30 p.m. The game will be video streamed live on GoValiants.TV starting at 4:15 p.m.
