PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — The No. 8 Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team fell to the No. 4 Oswego State Lakers, 4-1, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action Saturday night. The Cardinals, who saw their three-game winning streak against the Lakers snapped, go to 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the league, while the Lakers remain undefeated at 7-0 and 5-0. Both teams' national rankings are according to this week's U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) Division III national poll.
Plattsburgh State sophomore Cole Stallard (Waleska, Ga./New Hampshire Junior Monarchs) scored with help from junior Ayrton Valente (Woodbridge, Ontario/Mississauga Chargers). Senior Brady Rouleau (Fort Macleod, Alberta/Quinnipiac) totaled 34 saves in net.
Oswego State senior Chris Waterstreet and junior Mitchell Herlihey both had one goal and one assist, with classmate Andrew Barton and junior David Ferreira also registering goals. Sophomore David Jacobson logged 17 saves for the win.
The Lakers took a 2-1 lead after a 14-shot first period. Ferreira put the visitors on top at 11:45 when his shot from low in the right circle floated over Rouleau's right pad and into the far left corner of the net. After the Cardinals killed off a penalty, Stallard potted the equalizer at 14:03 as his left-circle shot went top shelf. The 1-1 stalemate lasted just 1:32 as Oswego State senior Chris Raguseo fed a pass across the front of the crease to Barton, who was parked on the left side for the quick tap in on the power play to give the visitors a 2-1 edge.
With both teams skating 4-on-4 early in the second period, Cardinal sophomore Cam Owens (Wilmington, Mass./Islanders Hockey Club) shook off a Laker defender and wristed a low shot that was kicked out by Jacobson. Oswego State then extended its lead to 3-1 as Waterstreet took the puck from around the net and fired a low-slot shot past Rouleau at 5:30. Plattsburgh State, which had challenged Jacobson with four shots before the Waterstreet tally, was kept to just one shot through the remainder of the period following the third Oswego State goal.
The Lakers recorded the fourth and final goal at 4:05 of the third period as Herlihery's point shot through traffic went into the left side. Six minutes later, Barton skated up ice on a breakaway but Rouleau swatted away the attempt. A Plattsburgh State power-play opportunity with 24 seconds remaining saw no shots go on target.
Plattsburgh State returns to action next weekend by hosting this year's PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout. The Cardinals square off against Concordia (Minn.) College at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 25.
