PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey defensemen accounted for six of the team's 11 points in Friday night's 5-2 win against Middlebury College in non-conference play at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena. The Cardinals move to 7-8 on the season, while the Panthers slip to 0-12-2. Plattsburgh State and Middlebury last met on Nov. 26 in the PrimeLink Great Northern ShootOut consolation game, with the Cardinals also prevailing by a 5-2 margin.
Plattsburgh State freshman blue liner Antoine Fournier-Gosselin (Saint-Lazare, Quebec/Cegep de Saint-Laurent scored his first collegiate goal and then added an assist, while classmate Joe Drabin (Rochester, N.Y./Wenatchee Wild) also logged one goal and one assist. Junior Matt Quilty (Midland, Ontario/Caledonia Corvairs) and sophomores Jakob Engvall (Jonkoping, Sweden/Ogden Mustangs) and Cam Owens (Wilmington, Mass./Islanders Hockey Club) each scored, with Engvall netting his first as a collegian. Freshman Charles Barber (Queensbury, N.Y./New York Bobcats) provided two assists, while sophomore Cole Stallard (Waleska, Ga./New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs) and freshman Philip Middleton (Vail, Colo./Salmon Arm Silverbacks) both contributed one helper. Senior Brady Rouleau (Fort Macleod, Alberta/Quinnipiac) stopped 22 shots for the win.
Middlebury sophomore Kamil Tkaczuk and freshman Trevor Turnbull both scored, while freshman Mitchell Allen dished two assists. Sophomore Jimmy McKee added an assist and won 10 faceoffs and junior Stephen Klein collected 44 saves in net.
Plattsburgh State led 1-0 after 15 shots, including a pair of caroms off of the posts, in the opening period. Engvall saw his point slapshot clang off of the right post at 7:27 and sophomore Pat Egan (Rochester, N.Y./Lone Star Brahmas) wristed a shot off the crossbar with 3:20 left in the stanza. Fournier-Gosselin, though, capitalized on the hosts' lone power-play chance of the period as he took a cross-ice pass from Stallard before firing a right-side slapshot low into the right side at 8:24. Middlebury was held to just five shots, only one of which was inside its own offensive faceoff circles.
Both sides scored twice during a busy second period. Turnbull struck first for the visitors to tie the game at 4:13. Allen fed an endboards pass to Turnbull, who flicked home a shot just inside the right post to to pull even at 1-1. Owens countered just 20 seconds later when he took a Middleton rebound and pounded home the go-ahead tally into the left side. Tkaczuk equalized at 8:35 by taking a cross-ice feed from McKee and snapping a high shot over Rouleau's blocker. Only 41 seconds later, Engvall let loose a wrist shot from the point that caromed off the inside of the crossbar and into the net.
Plattsburgh State, narrowly leading 3-2, after two periods, stretched its edge to two on Drabin's marker at 5:32. Off of his own rebound, Drabin took a low-angle left side shot that streaked across the goal line. Quilty iced the game with an empty-net tally at 18:33
Plattsburgh State is home again tomorrow at 7 p.m. to play Williams College in another non-conference tilt.
