PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – For the second time in as many games, the Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team broke a late-game tie to win. Freshman Joe Drabin (Rochester, N.Y./Wenatchee Wild) scored with 2:27 left in regulation to break a 5-5 stalemate as the Cardinals beat Morrisville State College, 7-5, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena on Friday. Plattsburgh State improves to 9-8 overall and 4-4 in the league, while Morrisville State drops to 2-14-2 and 1-7-1. The Cardinals were playing their first of nine straight SUNYAC games to close out the regular season.

Plattsburgh State sophomore Cam Owens (Wilmington, Mass./Islanders Hockey Club) registered two goals and one assists and was 13-of-20 on faceoffs, while senior Kyle Hall (Assiniboia, Saskatchewan/Battlefords North Stars) scored twice. Drabin, junior Ayrton Valente (Woodbridge, Ontario/Mississauga Chargers) and sophomore Cole Stallard (Waleska, Ga./New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs) all netted one goal, while freshman Antoine Desnoyers (Quebec City, Quebec/Cegep de Saint-Laurent) provided two assists. Sophomores Jakob Engvall (Jonkoping, Sweden/Ogden Mustangs) and Gavin Yates (Plymouth, Mass./South Shore Kings) both assisted once, with Yates going 9-of-13 on draws. Senior Brady Rouleau (Fort Macleod, Alberta/Quinnipiac) stopped 21 shots for the win.

Morrisville State sophomore Mike Giacometti had two goals and one assist, while senior Jordan Carvalho and sophomore Jimmy Philbin both logged one goal and one assist. Freshman Henry Hearon scored once and classmate Nick DeVito contributed two helpers. Freshman Jared Young collected 33 saves in net.

Philbin put the Mustangs up, 1-0, at 8:27 of the first period. From just outside the right post, Martin poked a pass through traffic to Philbin, who backhanded a shot into the left side with his back to the goal. The Cardinals looked to get on the board late in the stanza, but Engvall's point shot rang off the top of the right post with two minutes remaining. Plattsburgh State narrowly led shots, 10-8.

The hosts pumped in three second-period goals on 16 shots. Stallard potted the equalizer at 1:31 after taking Desnoyer's offensive zone faceoff win, and wheeling to the far right circle before firing a shot into the upper left corner. Owens put the Cardinals ahead at 6:08 when he redirected Engvall's point shot through Young's legs. Owens struck again and extended Plattsburgh State's to 3-1 at 13:27 when his high-slot shot tipped off of the bottom of Young's glove and into the right side. Morrisville State cut the margin to 3-2 just 2:30 later as Carvalho took a rebound and stuffed a shot past Rouleau's right pad.

A scoring frenzy saw seven third-period goals, five of which were power-play markers, between the teams. Valente opened with a short-handed tally only 44 seconds into the stanza before Giacometti scored at 8:25. Hall found the back of the net at 11:26 to give the Cardinals a 5-3 edge, but Giacometti's second goal of the period at 14:15 and Hearon's tally 1:21 later put the Mustangs and Cardinals at a 5-5 tie. With 3:37 remaining in the period, Plattsburgh State gained the man advantage and Drabin scored 1:10 later to put the hosts back on top. Yates picked up his own rebound on the left side, scooted into the high slot and backhanded a pass to Drabin, whose left circle shot beat Young blocker side. Hall added an unassisted empty netter with 20 seconds remaining to seal the game for the Cardinals.

Plattsburgh State resumes its SUNYAC slate with a road game against Morrisville State tomorrow at 7 p.m.
