Feaver Backstops Manhattanville to 3-1 Win over #14 Neumann

More news about: Manhattanville

RYE, N.Y. – Three Valiants found the back of the net and sophomore Tyler Feaver (Whitby, Ont./Whitby Fury (OJHL)) stopped 22 of 23 shots as Manhattanville College knocked off Neumann University, ranked 13th in Division III according to the latest USCHO.Com D-III national poll and 14th in the latest D3hockey.com national rankings, by a 3-1 score in a key ECAC West Conference clash on Friday night at Playland Ice Casino.

Senior co-captain Nolan Marshall (Drumheller, Alta./Camrose Kodiaks (AJHL)) and sophomores Bryan Platt (Trumbull, Conn./Springfield Pics (USPHL)) and Nigel Slade (St. Catherines, Ont./Niagara Falls Canucks (GOJHL)) all scored for Manhattanville (8-8-1, 4-2-0 ECAC West), which moved to 3-2-0 against nationally ranked teams this season and also moved into a two-way tie for second place in the ECAC West standings with the win. Fellow sophomore Jeff Beck (Broomall, Pa./Philadelphia Junior Flyers (EHL)) had the game's only multi-point night after assisting on both of his classmates' and linemates' goals.

Platt got the Valiants on the board first with 3:19 remaining in the opening period with his sixth goal of the year. Beck intercepted a pass sent around the boards and flipped the puck forward to Platt, who corralled it just before the Neumann crease and deked past netminder Matt Gibney for the score.

The Manhattanville lead doubled just 82 seconds later thanks to Marshall's second of the season. After senior Tanner Hicks (Calgary, Alta./Brooks Bandits (AJHL)) sent the puck around the boards to the near side, sophomore Matt Lippa (Richmond Hill, Ont./Oakville Blades (OJHL)) picked it up and sent a quick pass into the slot for a waiting Marshall, who buried the Valiants' 13th and final shot of the frame to give the home team a 2-0 edge after 20 minutes.

Neither team found the net in the second period, as Feaver turned aside all nine Knight attempts that came his way and Gibney stopped all seven Valiant shots.

Manhattanville held the third-highest scoring offense in the nation off the board for the first 50-plus minutes, but Neumann (11-4-2, 3-3-0 ECAC West) finally got on the board at 10:11 of the third period on Ryan Luiten's 10th of the year. But the Valiants responded less than a minute later, when Slade put home the rebound of a shot by senior Phil Dinner (Dallas, Texas/Connecticut Oilers (EJHL)) to give the home team its two-goal lead back.

That advantage was more than enough for Feaver and the Valiant defense, which limited Neumann's chances all night long and used some physical play to keep the Knights off their game. Manhattanville ended the night with a 30-23 edge in shots.

Manhattanville will take the rest of the weekend off before getting back into ECAC West Conference play next Friday, when the Valiants continue their seven-game homestand against Nazareth College beginning at 7 p.m.
