MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team skated to an 8-8 tie against Morrisville State College in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play at the Morrisville State IcePlex on Saturday. The Cardinals, now unbeaten in their last four games, move to 9-8-1 overall and 4-4-1 in the league, while the Mustangs are 2-14-3 and 1-7-2. The combined 16 goals are the most during a Cardinal hockey game since Plattsburgh State and SUNY Potsdam combined for 18 goals on Nov. 28, 1998.
Plattsburgh State freshman Philip Middleton (Vail, Colo./Salmon Arm Silverbacks) logged five points on one goal and four assists, while sophomore Cole Stallard (Waleska, Ga./New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs) had two goals and one assist. Sophomore Gavin Yates (Plymouth, Mass./South Shore Kings) scored twice, while junior Ayrton Valente (Woodbridge, Ontario/Mississauga Chargers), sophomore Cam Owens (Wilmington, Mass./Islanders Hockey Club) and freshman Antoine Fournier-Gosselin (Saint-Lazare, Quebec/Cegep de Saint-Laurent) each netted one goal. Freshman Antoine Desnoyers (Quebec City, Quebec/Cegep de Saint-Laurent) dished three assists and five other Cardinals provided helper each. Senior Brady Rouleau (Fort Macleod, Alberta/Quinnipiac) collected 33 saves for his second 30-save outing of the season.
Morrisville State spread the scoring with eight Mustangs burying goals. Junior Layne Martin and sophomore Ian Wood both registered one goal and two assists. Senior Joe Ftoma and sophomores Mike Giacometti and CJ Stubbs and freshmen Ryan Bochert and Henry Hearon each had one goal and one assist, while sophomore Jimmy Philbin potted one goal. Freshman Sal Stalteri was the goalie of record as he stopped 22 shots in 44:03 of relief. Classmate Jared Young started and made eight stops during the first period.
The Mustangs needed just 1:34 to take an early 1-0 lead, but the Cardinals clicked off five consecutive goals, including two by Stallard and a short-handed goal by Yates, to take a 5-1 lead. Hearon scored a power-play goal with 14 seconds remaining in the opening period to make the score 5-2. In the second period, Plattsburgh State buried two goals and went up 7-2 with just over 6:30 gone before the hosts scored twice to trim the deficit to 7-4. Fournier-Gosselin found the back of the net on the power play with 2:26 to go in the stanza to give the Cardinals an 8-4 edge heading into the third period.
Morrisville State, which netted three third-period goals against Plattsburgh State on Friday, did itself one better and pumped in four unanswered goals in Saturday's third period. Giacometti got the rally started with a goal at 3:55 before Stubbs fired in a power-play tally at 6:26. Ftoma scored at 10:58 and Wood buried the equalizer with 39 seconds left in regulation as the Mustangs were skating with an extra attacker. Plattsburgh State managed three overtime shots compared to Morrisville State's one. The Cardinals were forced to the penalty kill for the final 1:18 of the extra session.
Plattsburgh State is back next weekend for its final home games of the regular season, beginning Friday at 7 p.m. against No. 10 Buffalo State College. The Bengals are ranked according to the latest U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) Division III national poll.
