PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team scored twice in the second period en route to beating Fredonia, 3-1, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena Saturday afternoon. Plattsburgh State, now unbeaten in its last six games, improves to 11-8-1 overall and 6-4-1 in the league, while Fredonia goes to 9-8-2 and 5-6-1. The Cardinals ended their regular-season home schedule on Saturday and posted a 10-6 mark at Stafford Ice Arena this winter.
Plattsburgh State sophomore Cole Stallard (Waleska, Ga./New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs) and freshmen Evan Lindquist (Amston, Conn./Ottawa Jr. Senators) and Philip Middleton (Vail, Colo./Salmon Arm Silverbacks) each scored, with Lindquist netting his first collegiate goal. Senior Kyle Hall (Assiniboia, Saskatchewan/Battlefords North Stars), sophomores Cam Owens (Wilmington, Mass./Islanders Hockey Club) and Ross Sloan (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Blades) and freshman Noah Batis (Martinsville, Ind./New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs) each had one assist. Senior Brady Rouleau (Fort Macleod, Alberta/Quinnipiac) collected 24 saves for the win.
Fredonia senior Hunter Long scored with help from classmates Mackenzie McAvoy and Marcus Ortiz. McAvoy was 15-of-21 on faceoffs and sophomore Eric Bogart made 34 saves in net.
Lindquist got the scoring going at 9:55 of the first period. He gathered the puck behind the Cardinal net, skated up the left side past two Blue Devils and passed up to Sloan, whose shot attempt trickled to the net to Batis and Batis' rebound kick out to Lindquist, who crashed down the left side to tuck home the puck just inside the left post. Fredonia was able to muster only six shots in the opening period.
The hosts added two more goals in a 2:12 span in the second stanza. Hall's feed from the left side found a crashing Middleton, who ripped a shot into the upper right corner at 7:37. Stallard potted an unassisted shorthanded marker at 9:49 after causing a defensive-zone turnover and skating up ice before sliding the puck through a Blue Devil defender and stuffing home a shot through Bogart's legs to give the Cardinals a 3-0 lead.
Fredonia broke through with a tally at 5:51 of the third period as McAvoy collected the puck behind the net and fed up to Long in the slot, who spun around before shoveling the puck into the left side to make the score 3-1. With 1:16 remaining, Bogart was pulled for the extra attacker but the Blue Devils managed just one shot on net.
Three Plattsburgh State seniors were recognized as part of Senior Day: Hall, Rouleau and Patrick Hermans (North Andover, Mass./Northwood School).
With its regular-season home portion now complete, Plattsburgh State hits the road for five straight games against SUNYAC opponents, beginning with SUNY Cortland next Friday at 7 p.m.
