PINE VALLEY, N.Y. – Senior co-captain Teagan Waugh (Nanaimo, B.C./Powell River Kings (BCHL)) led four Valiant scorers with a goal and an assist as the Manhattanville College men's hockey team clinched the second seed and a first-round bye in the upcoming ECAC West Conference Tournament with a 4-3 victory over Elmira College on Saturday night at the Murray Athletic Center.
Manhattanville (14-9-1, 10-3-0 ECAC West) secured a top-two seed in the ECAC West for the 11th time in the last 15 years with the victory and also reached double figures in conference victories for just the third time in program history. The Valiants will host the lowest remaining seed from next Wednesday's first round in the ECAC West Tournament semifinals on Saturday, February 25.
In addition to Waugh's score, Manhattanville also received goals from junior Fabian Andark (Stockholm, Sweden/Vaxjo Lakers VHL (SWE)) and sophomores Nigel Slade (St. Catherines, Ont./Niagara Falls Canucks (GOJHL)) and Matt Lippa (Richmond Hill, Ont./Oakville Blades (OJHL)), with Lippa scoring for the fifth time in the last five games. Senior Nolan Marshall (Drumheller, Alta./Camrose Kodiaks (AJHL)) joined his fellow co-captain with a multi-point game of his own, registering a pair of assists as well.
Manhattanville jumped on Elmira (8-14-1, 3-9-0 ECAC West) early with Waugh's seventh of the year to give the visitors a 1-0 lead after the first period of play. The Valiants extended their lead to three in the second period, as Lippa potted his 15th of the year at the 6:48 mark and Andark scored his first of the season less than five minutes later.
Elmira got back within one with a pair of special-teams tallies, as Spencer MacLean scored on the power play late in the second period and Connor Powell scored shorthanded in the first 80 seconds of the third. But sophomore netminder Tyler Feaver (Whitby, Ont./Whitby Fury (OJHL)) kept the Elmira attack at bay and classmate Nigel Slade (St. Catherines, Ont./Niagara Falls Canucks (GOJHL)) added a key insurance goal with 68 seconds remaining, which turned out to be crucial after the Soaring Eagles netted an extra-attacker score with 15 seconds left on the clock.
Feaver came up big for Manhattanville in the win, making 30 saves as Elmira posted a 33-23 edge in shots over the course of the evening. Charl Pretorius made 19 saves for Elmira in a losing effort.
Manhattanville will close out the regular season on Friday night, when the Valiants travel to Neumann University for a 7 p.m. faceoff.
