BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The No. 15 Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team concluded its regular season with an 8-4 loss to the College at Brockport in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play at the Tuttle North Ice Arena on Saturday. The Cardinals, who see their 10-game unbeaten streak snapped, are 15-9-1 overall and 10-5-1 in the league, while the Golden Eagles go to 11-13-1 and 7-9. Plattsburgh State is ranked according to the latest national poll.
The Cardinals earn the conference's No. 2 seed and will have a first-round postseason bye. Plattsburgh State hosts a semifinal game next Saturday at 7 p.m. against the second-lowest remaining team from Wednesday's two quarterfinal games. Plattsburgh State junior Matt Quilty (Midland, Ontario/Caledonia Corvairs) and sophomores Jesse Neher (Calgary, Alberta/Cowichen Valley Capitals), Cam Owens (Wilmington, Mass./Islanders Hockey Club) and Cole Stallard (Waleska, Ga./New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs) all scored. Freshman Joe Drabin (Rochester, N.Y./Wenatchee Wild) had two assists, while five Cardinals provided one helper, including senior Kyle Hall (Assiniboia, Saskatchewan/Battlefords North Stars), who was appearing in his 100th career game. Senior Brady Rouleau (Fort Macleod, Alberta/Quinnipiac) collected 31 saves.
Brockport, which swept the season series against Plattsburgh State for the first time ever, received points from nine players. Freshman Doc Gentzler provided two goals and two assists, while junior Dylan Shapiro chipped in two goals and one assist. Junior David Horan scored twice and senior Jake Taylor dished three helpers. Freshman Matt Schneider made 27 stops for the win.
Plattsburgh State and Brockport both scored in the opening period as the hosts owned a 16-11 shot advantage. Neher deposited the game's first goal at 14:47 before Horan buried the equalizer at 18:01.
The second period saw a flurry of action with the teams combining for eight goals. Shapiro, Gentzler, junior Aidan Verbeke and sophomore Tim Kielich all scored in a 5:33 span as Brockport netted four consecutive goals to take a 5-1 lead. Owens and Quilty scored 2:51 apart to bring the Cardinals to a 5-3 margin. Gentzler and Stallard both potted power-play goals to round out the period as Brockport led, 6-4, after two stanzas.
Plattsburgh State took shots, 13-5, in the final period. Horan buried his second tally of the game at 11:34 and Shapiro chipped in an empty-net goal with 1:40 left to close out the scoring.
