UNE blanks Western New England, 5-0; unbeaten in last six

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The University of New England concluded the 2017 calendar year with a 5-0 victory over Western New England University in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's ice hockey action Saturday afternoon (Dec. 9) at the Olympia Ice Center.

Tate Sproxton recorded 20 saves in the shutout for the Nor'easters (7-3-2, 5-3-2 CCC) -- their first of the season. UNE is now 5-0-1 in its last six contests.

Brett Mecrones led the offensive effort with three points, which included the first goal 13 minutes into the opening period and the last in the waning seconds of the 3rd session. Liam Neuman and Tucker Ross, respectively, assisted on the scoring plays.

Derek Mecrones got help from his twin brother and Pavel Tereshchenko to make it 2-0 at the end of 20 minutes.

Ross notched his first assist in the 2nd frame, when Ryan Burr found the back of the net. Early in the final stanza, Jason Harmon registered a short-handed marker to up the lead to 4-0.

Kevin Gollmer posted 31 stops in goal for the Golden Bears (4-9-1, 1-8-1 CCC).

The Nor'easters return to the ice on January 2 (7 p.m.) at home against Colby College.
