#12 Nor'easters fend off Leopards, 6-5, for ninth straight win

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Ryan Bloom and Jeff Eppright notched two goals apiece for No.12 University of New England, which defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology by a 6-5 margin in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's ice hockey action Saturday night (Jan. 20) at the Harold Alfond Forum.

The nation's longest active unbeaten streak has reached 13 games (12-0-1), including nine consecutive victories. The Nor'easters are now 14-3-2 on the year and 7-3-2 in the CCC.

UNE scored the only two of the 1st period, only to see the Leopards even things up during the initial portion of the 2nd. The deadlock lasted a mere 14 seconds before Bloom (9:24), Eppright (14:07), and Eppright (18:45) gave the hosts a 5-2 cushion through 40 minutes.

Wentworth trimmed it to 5-4 early in the 3rd, but Bloom struck with 6:59 to go for some breathing room (6-4).

With UNE serving a five-minute major penalty in the final stages of the contest, WIT closed the gap on an extra-attacker, power-play goal at the 2:33 mark. The visitors continued to press with that 6-on-4 advantage for the last 1:34, but were unable to find the equalizer.

Ben Churchfield totaled 37 saves to up his personal ledger to 8-1-2 with the UNE goaltending duties.

Eppright had a game-high four points to guide the Nor'easters, who improved on their Division III-leading power-play efficiency by going 3-for-4. Tyler Seltenreich and Tucker Ross accounted for the goals in the opening stanza; Brady FleurentRyan BurrDimitris Jones, and Max Rasberg each tossed in two assists.

The Leopards got goals from five different players: Adam Lane, Adam Tracey, Matthew Kennedy, CJ Grinnell, and Georgy Gorodetskii. Ryan Hubbard turned in 21 stops between the pipes.
