POTSDAM, N.Y.—Freshman forward Jacob Juron (Latham, N.Y./South Shore Kings) scored two goals as the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (8-8-4, 4-6-1 SUNYAC) defeated the College at Brockport (9-10-1, 3-7-1) 5-3 on Saturday night. The Bears also got goals from freshman forward Jon Venter (Guilford, Conn./Syracuse Stars), senior assistant captain Sean Kacersoky (Kendall Park, N.J./New York Bobcats) and sophomore forward Vinny Guimond (Sorel-Tracy, Quebec/Gloucester Rangers).
Potsdam jumped on the Golden Eagles early. After a turnover in Brockport's zone, Venter picked up the puck at the blue line and went in all alone to beat junior goalie Jake Moore (Arcade, N.Y./Springfield Pics) at 2:00. At the 12:00 mark, Kacerosky grabbed a loose puck at center ice and blasted a shot on Moore from the right point. Freshman forward Paul Michura (Chester, N.J./New Jersey Rockets) knocked the rebound to Kacerosky in the corner and he attempted to center it. The puck went off of Moore's skates and back into the net for 2-0 lead. Just 29 seconds later, Golden Eagles freshman forward Shane Visnick (Boca Raton, Fla./Hartford Wolfpack) scored from the left side of the net to close to within in 2-1. The Bears outshot Brockport 16-8 in the period and led 2-1 after 20 minutes.
Brockport tied the game at the 5:07 mark of the second period. The puck deflected off sophomore forward Connor Hutchins (North Richlands Hills, Texas/Brookings Blizzard) and past a screened Potsdam senior goaltender Brendan McMenimen (Merrimack, Mass./Islanders Hockey Club). The tie lasted exactly 10 minutes. Juron beat Moore at 15:07 to put the Bears back in front 3-2. Sophomore forward Bryce Ferrell (Buffalo, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and freshman forward Joey Sollazzo (Ottawa, Ontario/Navan Grads) assisted on the goal. Less than two minutes later at 17:02, Guimond snuck a wraparound past Moore to extend Potsdam's lead back to two goals. Sollazzo and senior forward Jake Martin (Montreal, Quebec/Concordia) notched the assists. The Bears finished the period with a 12-9 advantage in shots and a 4-2 lead.
Potsdam started the third period on the penalty kill, but escaped unscathed. The Golden Eagles were able to make a final push in the last five minutes of the contest. Hutchins netted his second to get Brockport back within in one at 14:10, but Potsdam answered 2:07 later. Senior assistant captain Dylan Vander Esch (San Jose, Calif./Hartford Wolfpack) shoveled the puck up the boards past a couple Golden Eagles to Juron. Juron then beat sophomore goalie Matt Schneider (Manlius, N.Y./Florida Eels) on the breakaway for the contest's final goal. Schneider was pulled with 2:19 left, but Brockport didn't get any closer.
McMenimen made 25 saves for his 17th career victory. Moore stopped 22 shots and allowed four goals in the first 37:02. Schneider made 10 saves and allowed a goal in the last 20:39.
The win ends a nine-game winless skid (0-7-2) for Potsdam and moves the Bears back into fourth place in the SUNYAC.
Potsdam is now 44-36-8 in the all-time series with Brockport dating back to Jan. 28, 1977. Tonight's win gives the Bears their first season sweep of the Golden Eagles since the 2010-11 campaign.
Vander Esch is now just five points away from the 100-point club with 59 goals and 36 assists in 94 games.
Next, the Bears head to Plattsburgh State on Saturday for a 7 p.m. contest with the Cardinals. Potsdam defeated Plattsburgh 3-1 in Maxcy on Nov. 18.
