ASHWAUBENON, Wis. - Saturday marked the fourth consecutive year that St. Norbert has hosted Augsburg in the NCAA tournament, and it ended up marking the fourth consecutive time St. Norbert has emerged victorious as a Dominick Sacco tally 2:19 into overtime lifted the Green Knights to a 4-3 first round win over the Auggies. It didn't come easy however, as needed two goals in the final 5:04 of regulation to come back from a late 3-1 deficit and force the extra session.
After a scoreless opening period that featured limited but quality chaces by both sides, St. Norbert's Roman Uchyn put the Green Knights up 1-0 at 11:57 of the second when, on a breakaway and after having his stick lifted from behind by Augsburg's Matt Hines, he got his stick back down at the last second and chipped the puck over the left shoulder of Auggies' goaltender Nick Schmit.
By the end of the period it was still 1-0 St. Norbert despite the fact the Green Knights held a 24-12 shot advantage through the opening 40 minutes.
In the third, Augsburg finally got on the board after Chandler Madry corralled a puck below the St. Norbert goal line and hit a slashing Tommy Carey who beat St. Norbert's T.J. Black to make it a 1-1 game 3:58 into the period.
Augsburg claimed its first lead of the night at the 8:03 mark when Austin Dollmer beat St. Norbert defenseman Luke Davison down the right side to spring a two-on-one that was finished off after Dollmer found Eric Brenk open on the left side and Brenk found the back of an open St. Norbert net. Later, the Auggies added another when Jason Krych got one past Black while on the power play and it was 3-1 Augsburg with 7:33 to play.
90 seconds later and with St. Norbert on the ropes, a hooking call on Augsburg's Alex Rodriguez sent St. Norbert to the power play and the Green Knights found life when Riley Christensen beat Schmit high with a wrister from the top of the left circle and it was a 3-2 game with 5:04 remaining. Then, with just 1:11 to play, an unmarked Uchyn gained the puck just to the right of the Augsburg goal, walked in, and roofed a backhand shot over Schmit's shoulder and it was a 3-3 game.
The dramatic finish set the stage for overtime but the extra session didn't last long as it took just over two minutes for a shot by Uchyn to careen through traffic, off of Sacco, and into the back of the Augsburg net.
St. Norbert finished the night with a 40-22 edge in shots. Black finished with 19 saves to get the win in goal while Schmit made 36 saves for Augsburg. St. Norbert finished the night 1-for-4 on the power play while Augsburg tallied once in just two chances with the extra skater.
The win advances St. Norbert to a quarterfinal at UW-Stevens Point next Saturday, which will mark the fourth straight season the Green Knights have advanced to at least the quarterfinal round of the NCAA tournament. The Green Knights and Pointers have met once prior this season as the two skated to a 1-1(ot) tie on November 17.
