NEW BEDFORD, Mass. -- Sophomore Eric Bolden's (Oswego, Ill.) golden goal 3:53 into overtime lifted UMass Dartmouth to a 3-2 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference ice hockey victory over Fitchburg State Saturday evening at Hetland Arena.
Bolden, who collected his fifth game-winner overall and his second golden goal of the season, slipped home a rebound of senior Jonathan Ruiz's (Williamstown, N.J.) for the host Corsairs (6-7, 3-3 MASCAC), who have won four of their last five overall dating back to November 29th. After the visiting Falcons (6-4-2, 3-2-2 MASCAC) grabbed an early 1-0 lead on junior Christopher Vicario's (Cranston, R.I.) tally, sophomore Nicholas Short (Los Angeles, Calif.) netted the tying goal with 3:37 to play in the opening period and then gave UMass Dartmouth a 2-1 cushion with his second of the night 8:56 into the middle stanza. That score held up until sophomore Sascha Figi (Kloten, Switzerland) forged a 2-2 tie for Fitchburg State with 7:43 remaining in regulation on an unassisted marker, setting up Bolden's heroics in the extra session.
Junior Steven Leonard (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) also assisted on Bolden's game-winner for the Corsairs, who also received assists off the sticks of seniors Brendan McDonough (Wilmington, Mass.) and Mason Nichols (Oviedo, Fla.), junior Tommy DeFelice (Tolland, Conn.) and freshman Jimmy Pelton (Syracuse, N.Y.). Figi added a helper on Vicario's goal to finish with two points in the setback for the Falcons, who also received an assist from senior Nick DiNicola (Wolcott, Conn.).
Sophomore Parker Butler (Summit, N.J.) earned his second win of the season with a 23-save effort in goal for UMass Dartmouth, while sophomore Brian McGrath (Worcester, Mass.) made 40 stops in the setback for Fitchburg State. The Corsairs outshot the Falcons by a 43-25 margin overall and held a 40-35 advantage in face off wins for the contest.
UMass Dartmouth heads to Salem, Mass. on Thursday evening to take on Salem State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference outing that faces off at 7:00 pm, while Fitchburg State hosts Suffolk in a non-league clash on Tuesday evening in Fitchburg, Mass. that also faces off at 7:00 pm.
