BLAINE, Minn. – Goals from Emil Hiiri, Tyler Bump and Jesse Lawman lifted the St. Olaf College men's hockey team to a 3-1 road victory over Bethel University on Saturday evening at Schwan Super Rink.
Hiiri and Bump scored just 1:18 apart late in the first period to provide all the offense St. Olaf (5-15-2, 3-9-2 MIAC) would need to avenge a 4-1 loss to Bethel (4-19-2, 4-10-2 MIAC) the night before. After the Royals got within a goal inside the first minute of the second period, Lawman tallied his first-career goal late in the second to help the Oles pick up their third road victory of the season.
Junior defensemen Paul Stehr and Roshen Jaswal each had a pair of assists in the win. Jaswal's two helpers brought his team-leading total to 10 this season, while Stehr recorded the second multi-point performance of his Ole career.
St. Olaf killed off a minor penalty midway through the first period before netting quick-fire goals from Hiiri and Bump to take control. Hiiri tallied his second goal of the season unassisted at 14:06 before Jaswal and Stehr set up Bump's fifth of the year 1:18 later. Bump's five goals this season put him in a tie with classmate Mitch Dolter for the team lead in the category.
A minor penalty to St. Olaf with 12 seconds remaining in the opening period allowed the Royals to start the second on the power play. Bethel converted on the power-play opportunity just 59 seconds into the period on a Nick Ketola goal.
Lawman restored the Oles' two-goal lead with 2:04 remaining in the third period with his first goal for St. Olaf, which was assisted by Stehr and Jaswal. Senior Eric Hancock saved the final 25 shots he faced in the game for St. Olaf to make the lead stand up.
Hancock made 33 saves on the way to picking up his second victory of the season. The 33 saves were the senior's second-highest total of the season. Ridge Gerads tallied 34 stops in the loss for the Royals.
St. Olaf wraps up the regular season with a series against Saint Mary's University (Minn.) next weekend, beginning with a trip to Winona on Friday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. The Oles host their Senior Night the following night and remain in contention for a MIAC Playoff spot entering the final weekend.
