Bloom hat trick powers #15 UNE past Wentworth, 5-1, in CCC tourney

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Ryan Bloom (CCC 1st Team) recorded his fourth career hat trick to lead the #3-seed University of New England to a 5-1 victory over #6-seed Wentworth Institute of Technology in the opening round of the 2019 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Men's Ice Hockey Championship at the Harold Alfond Forum on Wednesday night.

The nationally-ranked Nor'easters (18-6-2, No.15) advance into a semifinal matchup at #2-seed Curry College on Saturday (6:50 p.m.) [Interactive Bracket]. UNE won the season series against the Colonels back in November, 4-1 and 6-2.

Bloom accounted for both first-period goals to give the hosts a 2-0 lead after one [Watch] [Watch]Brendan Donohuegot on the board 3:32 into the second period as his shot ricocheted of a Wentworth defender into the net [Watch]. Bloom got his third, and team-leading 19th goal of the year, just under two minutes later on a short-handed finish [Watch]Tucker Ross buried a one-timer from the left circle for the final UNE goal with 9:26 to play in the middle frame [Watch].

Nate Chase scored the lone Leopards' goal in the third.

Ben Churchfield (CCC 2nd Team) was not tested much over the first two periods, but made 15 saves in the final 20 minutes for a total of 23 on the night. Brady Fleurent (CCC Player of the Year), Dimitris Jones (CCC 1st Team), Chris Jones, and Liam Darcy each had two assists to support the victory.

For Wentworth, which ends the season at 8-14-4 overall, Thomas Draper had 25 saves.
