OSWEGO, N.Y. - The Hobart College ice hockey team defeated Oswego 3-2 in a NCAA quarterfinal contest at the Marano Campus Center this evening. The Statesmen are now 21-7-2 overall on the season.
With the win, Hobart will be making its third trip to the national semifinals. Hobart advanced to the final four in 2006 and 2009.
Junior Lawson MacDougall and sophomores Travis Schneider and Ryan Lynch scored in the win for the Statesmen. First-year Liam Lascelle was stellar in goal, stopping 26 of the 28 shots he faced. Joseph Molinaro and Travis Broughman scored for the Lakers (19-7-2). David Richer made 12 saves in the loss.
MacDougall opened the scoring at the 14:09 mark of the first period. He broke up a pass at his own blue line and raced the length of the rink. He deked around the goalie and slid the puck across the goal line. It was MacDougall's ninth goal of the season.
Oswego answered back two minutes later. Molinaro picked up his own rebound and flipped it past Lascelle for his 15th goal of the season. Josh Nendal and Devin Campbell were credited with assists on the goal.
Hobart jumped in front for good 64 seconds into the second period. Lynch fired home a one-timer from the left faceoff circle for his ninth goal of the season. Junior Julien Denicourt was credited with an assist on the goal. The Statesmen doubled their lead at the 13:29 mark of the period. Schneider broke up a pass in the neutral zone, skated into the offensive zone and wristed a shot over Richer's shoulder. It was Schneider's team-leading 15th goal of the season. The shorthanded goal was unassisted.
Oswego's best scoring chance of the second period came in the closing minutes. Anthony Passero had a chance inside the right faceoff circle. Sophomore Mike Faulkner blocked the shot, keeping the puck out of the open net.
Oswego made it a one-goal game with 12 seconds remaining in regulation. With the goalie pulled in favor of the extra attacker, Broughman tucked home a loose puck for his 13th goal of the season.
The Lakers held a 28-15 edge in shots on goal. Hobart was 1-for-2 on the power play and Oswego was 0-for-2.
The Statesmen will be back in action on Friday, March 22, when they take on Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The location of the final four had not been determined at the time of publication.
