Bengals Use Strong Third Period to Sweep Women’s Hockey


Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's hockey team was unable to find the back of the net as visiting Buffalo State College secured a weekend sweep with a 4-0 victory on Sunday afternoon in the Roos House.

The teams played a back-and-forth first period as the Roos (4-11-1) came out strong. The penalty kill units combined to go 5-for-5 as the teams went to first intermission tied at 0-0. 

The Bengals (10-3-0) broke the scoreless tie at 6:51 of the second when Brooke Krantz put home her second of the season off a pass from Bri Carroll from behind the net. Despite trailing 1-0 after two periods SUNY Canton outshot Buffalo State 13-7 in the second stanza.

Buffalo State added an insurance goal 3:38 into the third when Erin Gehen netted her 12th of the season off the setup from Nikki Kirchberger. The Bengals made it 3-0 at 7:28 when Rachel Lenard ripped a shot that went off the left post that skidded across the goal line. Emma Ruggiero and Caitie Horvatits earned helpers on the play.

Buffalo State added a fourth goal just three seconds into a 4-on-4 when Madeline Kromer went top shelf over the stick side. Ruggiero was credited with an assist on the play.

Justine Silva stopped all 27 saves she faced in her second shutout of the season to earn her eighth victory. Illie Berisha(Lake Ariel, PA) turned aside 24 shots for the Roos.
