Bison drop 9-0 to Morrisville St.

HARRISVILLE, R.I. – The Nichols College women's ice hockey team fell to Morrisville State 9-0 in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at Levy Rink.
Freshman Renee Stevenson (Winnipeg, Manitoba) had a four point performance (3-1-3) while classmate Maddison Devlin (Campbell River, B.C.) had a goal and an assist to pace the Mustangs to their eighth win of the year.
Morrisville outshot the Bison 44-13 for the game including 17-5 in the second period.
The Mustangs wasted no time getting on the board with sophomore Maria deWilde (Caistorville, Ontario) potting her third goal of the season on an assist from freshman Kylie Cameron (Burlington, Ontario).
Freshman Jessica Ujcik (Munich, Germany) and Stevenson finished the period with a goal and an assist apiece to give Morrisville State a 3-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
Perhaps the best Bison opportunity of the game came in the final two minutes of the first period when sophomore Kelly Ferreira (North Falmouth, Mass.) diced her way through the Mustang defense and fired a shot to the blocker side of sophomore goaltender Renee Schmaltz (Beaumont, Alberta) that nearly found its way into the net.
The Mustangs scored four goals in the second period and added another two goals in the third period to defeat the Bison 9-0 for the second time this season.
Sophomore Mikayla Castro (Killingworth, Conn.) paced the Bison with four shots while senior Samantha DiReda(Shrewsbury, Mass.) added three and junior Laura Christie (Hudson, Mass.) had two. Mustang forward deWilde had a game-high seven shots in the win.
Sophomore Lauren Bennett (Chicago, Ill.) – who was making her first-collegiate start – made 25 saves in the loss while junior captain Lindsay O'Connell (Danvers, Mass.) played the third period for the Bison and made 10 saves. Schmaltz stopped 13 shots to move to 8-0-0 on the year with her sixth shutout.
