HARRISVILLE, R.I. – The Nichols College women's ice hockey team and Becker College finished in a 2-2 tie in non-conference action Friday afternoon at Levy Rink.
Juniors Ariana Dembro (Saugus, Mass.) and Amanda Moquin(Middleboro, Mass.) both scored their first collegiate goals to lead the Bison to a tie of the Hawks.
The Bison fired off a season-high 39 shots – the most for the team since November 28 of last season against Johnson & Wales – while the Hawks had 37.
Becker was the first to get on the board as they scored with just 34 seconds remaining in the first period. Freshman Brianna Luciani (Bellingham, Mass.) scored the power-play goal for the Hawks on assists from sophomores Hannah Elmer (Chicopee, Mass.) and Brittany Aiello (Franklin Park, Ill.).
Nichols countered with a pair of second period goals to take a 2-1 lead into the second intermission. Dembro beat sophomore goaltender Julia Johnson (Littleton, Colo.) to even the score at 3:03 of the second period. Junior Laura Christie(Hudson, Mass.) – who drew the start on defense rather than her usual forward slot – earned the assist on the goal.
At 12:55 of the second period, Christie assisted on another goal to put the Bison in the lead. Moquin fired a shot through traffic that ricocheted into the net. Sophomore Kelly Ferreira (North Falmouth, Mass.) was also credited with the assist on the goal.
In the third period Becker had the best opportunities to score. The Hawks had their first great opportunity to tie the game with around 10 minutes to go in the period. Sophomore Michaela Martin (Sheldon, Vt.) broke away from the Bison defense around center ice and skated alone to the net but fired a wrist shot wide.
Sophomore Claudia Gee (Randolph, Vt.) scored the equalizer at 14:33 of the third period to ultimately send the game into overtime.
The Bison outshot the Hawks 9-1 in the overtime period but couldn't get one into the goal.
Sophomore Cassandra Goyette (Norton, Mass.) stopped 35 shots in the tie while Johnson made 37 saves for the Hawks.
