PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Callie Jackson scored her fourth goal of the season in overtime to lift the Nichols College women's ice hockey team to a 4-3 win over Johnson & Wales (RI) University in Colonial Hockey Conference (CHC) action Thursday evening at the Dunkin Donuts Center.
Junior Mikayla Castro scored twice, juniors Kirsten Sullivan and MacKenzie Lyons collected two assists, and freshman Mel McAleer racked up a goal and an assist for the Bison (8-7-1, 3-4-0 CHC), who tied the single-season program mark of eight wins in a season. Junior netminder Cassandra Goyette turned aside 36 shots to earn her fifth win of the season.
Castro opened the scoring at 8:31 of the first period when she pounced on a rebound and lifted it over goaltender Kami Weiner on the power play. The Wildcats evened the score at one at 17:36 on Cassie Wakefield's seventh goal of the season. Less than two minutes later, McAleer walked around a defenseman and snapped a wrist shot past Weiner for her team-leading eight tally of the campaign.
JWU evened the score in the second on Linn Fernstrom's third goal of the season at 17:09, then grabbed the lead early in the third when Kathy Ensor potted her first of the season at 2:46.
The Wildcats held the lead until the final minute of the contest. With Goyette on the bench for the extra attacker, Castro redirected a point shot from Lyons that hit Nicole Cowan on the way to the net to send the game to overtime, where Jackson knocked the puck past Weiner in front at 3:11.
The Bison converted on two of their four power-play opportunities. The Wildcats outshot NC 39-38.
