Pipers Headed To MIAC Finals

More news about: Hamline

Thanks in part to some special work by the special teams -- and goalie Mckenna Hulslander -- the Hamline women's hockey team is one step from the NCAA tournament. Hulslander, a freshman, batted away 30 shots in goal and Jordan Hansen had a goal and an assist as Hamline defeated Augsburg, 4-1, in a MIAC semifinal playoff game Saturday at TRIA Rink. The Pipers (19-4-3) thus advance to the conference championship game March 3 at Gustavus Adolphus. Game time is 2:00 p.m.

The winner of that game gets an automatic berth in the NCAA D-III tournament.

HU killed off seven player disadvantages and scored twice on the power play to wear down the Auggies. The visitors came out shooting. Helped by a pair of early power play, Augsburg held a 11-3 edge in shots on goal midway through the first period. Late in the frame, Madison Kolbow, a freshman, converted on a power play to give HU a 1-0.

In the second period, Leah Schwartzman neatly deflected a shot home (also on a power play) at 14:08. 76 seconds later, Hansen, also a freshman, whistled a shot just under the cross bar to give HU a 3-0 lead after two.

The Auggies finally got one past Hulslander midway in the third and kept up the pressure for several minutes. HU held them off and slated the game away when freshman Madison Gaffney slid the puck into an empty net. Bre Simon led the 25 shot Pipers with seven while Schwartzman added five.

The Pipers and Gusties split a pair of games in mid-November. HU defeated GAC, 5-2, on November 17 at Oscar Johnson Arena -- the first triumph ever for a Piper women's puck contingent. The Gusties took the rematch the  next afternoon in St. Peter, 4-2.
