UNE grabs season-opener over Southern Maine, 4-3

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Carly Perreault scored with six minutes remaining to lift the University of New England women's ice hockey team in a 4-3 victory over the University of Southern Maine in the season-opener on Friday night at the Harold Alfond Forum.

UNE (1-0) forced the Huskies into a defensive-zone turnover and Perreault put home the rebound off a shot by Jessie Scott to secure the win for the Nor'easters [Watch].
The Huskies (0-1) jumped in front first as Shannon Douglas scored from the top of the right circle at the 4:42 mark of the opening period. Kenady Nevicosi put back a loose puck in front later in the first to knot the score [Watch]. UNE took a 2-1 lead into the intermission after Tatum Gietl scored on a wraparound with 38 seconds remaining in the frame [Watch].
A goal by Katie Nolan in the second, off a feed from Brianna Doty, tied the score at 2-all heading into the final frame.
Katie Babineau put the Nor'easters back on top with a breakaway goal just over five minutes into the third [Watch], but Southern Maine quickly answered just 24 seconds later as Nolan found Jill Hannigan for a score.
The shots were lopsided in favor of UNE as the home skaters held a 47-28 advantage. Whitney Padgett made 42 stops in net for USM, while Julia Benjamin had 25 saves for the hosts.
