Pipers Turn Tables on Tommies

More news about: Hamline

Leah Schwartzman completed a turnaround with a goal 28 seconds into overtime to lift the Hamline women's hockey team to 3-2 win over No. 1 St. Thomas at TRIA Rink Saturday. The dramatic victory, which saw the Pipers rally from a 2-0 third period deficit, was a total reversal of the night before when UST performed a similar rally for a 3-2 home ice win.

Jaela O'Brien kicked out 12 shots in goal for the win. Meanwhile, the Pipers kept UST goalie Mackenzie Torpy busy all afternoon with 37 shots.

Despite HU holding a 13-5 edge in shots on goal, it was the visiting Tommies who found the back of the net twice on goals by Sam Auman and Rachel Werdin.

It stayed 2-0 into the third period when Bre Simon, the top scorer in D-III women's hockey, tucked a shot under the crossbar for her 24th goal of the season at 2:04. A series of penalties both ways slowed things down with the Pipers eventually clicking on a power play when Dani Wright blasted a shot through traffic to tie the game.

It didn't take long to decide matters in the extra session.  Molly Garin passed to Simon who saw Schwartzman streaking up the ice. The senior drilled home the winner, touching off a wild celebration.

The Pipers, whose school record 17 game unbeaten streak the night before, dealt the first place Tommies their first loss of the season. HU, which finished in second place in the MIAC (14-2-2) and was ranked No. 4 in the country in the latest polls, is now 20-2-3.

Hamline now moves on to the MIAC playoffs. The Pipers will host Augsburg (14-6-5, 11-3-4 MIAC) at TRIA Rink on Saturday, February 23 at 4:00 p.m. The teams played to a 2-2 OT tie at Augsburg on January 11. HU rallied for a 3-2 win over the Auggies at TRIA Rink the next afternoon. St. Thomas, the top playoff seed, will play the winner of the Thursday play in game between Gustavus Adolphus and  St. Mary's on the same day. The MIAC Championship game is March 2 at the site of the highest remaining seed.
