Schwartzman Hat Paces Pipers Past Auggies, 6-1

More news about: Hamline

Leah Schwartzman started ... and finished ... a six goal barrage that has sent the Hamline women's hockey team into the MIAC Championship game for the second year in a row. The senior recorded her first HU hat trick and added an assist as the Pipers overwhelmed Augsburg, 6-1, in a MIAC semifinal game at TRIA Rink Saturday.

The Pipers, 21-2-3, will meet St. Thomas on Saturday, March 2 with the time and arena to be announced at a later date.

After a scoreless first period, the line of Schwartzman, Molly Garin and Bre Simon struck for two goals in the first 2:25 of the second period to take charge of the game. Simon went first, converting a Schwartzman pass into the second period. Schwartzman went next, finishing off a Garin feed. Jordan Hansen further rocked the Auggies at 4:04 and Madison Kolbow made it 4-0 midway through the period. The Auggies got one back later on in the middle frame but Schwaartsman responded with two third period tallies, the last of which went into an empty net to close out the scoring.

HU outshot the Auggies, 31-20, for the game. Piper goalie Jaela O'Brien stopped 19 shots to push her record to 8-0-0 on the season.

The defending postseason champs will now face a team they split a [air of 3-2 games with last week for an automatic berth in the NCAA D-III tournament. The Tommies, the top seed in the playoffs, defeated Gustavus Adolphus, 4-0.
